Dreams of the West Coast
“Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and it's beauty.” - Albert Einstein
Orcas are intertwined with my memories of living on the West Coast yet I cannot place specific memories of seeing these majestic creatures in person. First nations images from trips to the Museum of Anthropology, a visit to an aquarium, stories taught in school blend in my mind.
In 2005 these Resident Killer Whales, who migrate to BC Coastal waters each summer, were added to the endangered species list. By then I had grown up and moved away.
Yet they call to me to paint their story and dream of a resurgence of Orcas.
